Chapter 1 begins with knowing the name of our narrator, Nick Carraway. He begins by seeing his cousin Daisy which he hasn't seen for years and her husband and also his friend, Tom Buchanan. Daisy's friend Jordan Baker is also there and is portrayed by both movies as Nick's love interest but that may or may not be entirely true for the book. The Buchanan's live in East Egg while Nick lives across the water way in West Egg which. He finds out from Jordan that he lives near Mr. Gatsby he seems to throw extravagant parties and the way Daisy says "Gatsby?" she seems to know him. At dinner everyone is talking about the latest issues of the day when the phone rings. Tom goes out to answer and soon after Daisy goes after him. Nick finds out from Jordan that the person on the other end of the line is Tom's mistress that everyone seems to know about except the lady's husband. When Nick gets home he sees his mysterious neighbor, Mr. Gatsby on the dock.
It was apparent that Tom tried to make himself seem bigger in this chapter with his extensive house and mistress. You can clearly tell that Daisy knows a lot of or knew Gatsby at one point in her life from the way she reacting from hearing his name. I did wonder, well if Daisy knows about Tom cheating her, then why does she even bother staying around? I think maybe its because there's not much she can do about it. She did describe girls as being "a pretty little fool" (about her daughter).
